Nest Monitoring
Nest monitoring of wild kea nests was initiated by the KCT in 2009 to support the Population Reseach work. Nest monitoring will continue throughout the duration of the Summer survey at least until December 2011.
2010 - 2011 Arthurs Pass and Nelson Lakes

The KCT has received funding from Wellington Zoos Conservation Fund for 2 years worth of wild nest monitoring in two key survey sites. This will enable us to send out two experienced field staff to check out the status of known nest sites in Arthur’s Pass and Nelson lakes for 10 days in September and again in December 2010 and 2011. It will also allow personnel to track radio-tagged females to new nest sites and provide valuable information on breeding effort for this year in these areas.
Wellington Zoo staff will also have the opportunity for some direct field experience learning how to track and find nests, and attach bands and transmitters to adult females and chicks (if found).

Nest Cameras

Five nest cameras were purchased early 2011 with WZCF money and three have now been deployed at known kea nests in Nelson Lakes and Arthurs Pass. These are now providing some fascinating insights as to activity of pests (possums) and kea in and around the nest cavities.
Discussions are now underway with DOC St Arnaud to look at ways of protecting nests during the upcoming breeding season.
The remaining two cameras will be deployed during June and we will look to purchase more to install inside nest cavities to follow progress throughout any chicks development this year.
We will continue to upload this information over the course of the coming year .
