The 2013 Kea Conservation Trust
Kea Photo Competition
Corey Mosen Photography
Winner: Sara Larcombe
The first Kea Conservation Trust photo competition, was run by our field coordinator (and keen kea photographer), Corey Mosen, throughout 2013. The competition was promoted on Facebook and called for people to submit their favorite kea or kea related image to be judged by a few kea experts. This year’s winner, announced in November was Sara Larcombe. Sara’s winning photo was of a kea at Gertrude Saddle (a photo location which our judging panel considered a feat in itself to reach!). “The kea in the photo had been flying past when it spotted us and came down to investigate. I love kea for their inquisitiveness – most native birds tend to run or fly off when approached, but kea seem just as interested in you as you are in them”. Sara received a Kea Conservation Trust T-Shirt, a glowing sky clothing voucher, a kea photo book with her photo incorporated in it, publication of her photo in our very own Nestor Notabilis magazine and a volunteer expedition in the mountains with kea. “I took part in the Kahurangi Kea Survey for most of a week in
January. Despite some very early starts and inclement weather, it was a fantastic trip. There were six of us taking part in the survey while I was there, so we would split up into pairs and station ourselves at survey points along the ridgeline. Although Corey and I didn’t manage to catch any kea, I got to explore a part of the country that was new to me, I witnessed some spectacular sunrises and sunsets, and I learnt a whole lot about kea and the threats they face from Corey and the other kea people. I thoroughly enjoyed taking part in this survey, and I’d
happily devote more of my time to helping monitor this marvelous creature”. Our second prize winner, Aaron Joyce, won the public’s choice with his stunning image of a kea in flight. Our 2014 competition will soon be open and we will have some great prizes for the winners, so if you haven’t already done so, get those shutters clicking.
