The 2014 Kea Conservation Trust
Kea Photo Competition
Corey Mosen Photography
Winner: Rob Pine
Our third place getter, Alaric McCarthy, also took his stunning image of a kea flying past pylons up at the Viaduct Lookout in Arthurs Pass. Kea are unique creatures that occupy a vast area of New Zealand’s Southern Alps. They are often found on high mountain passes or causing mischief around a back country hut. We are anticipating that the 2015 kea photo competition will encourage people to get out there and capture images of kea in this amazing environment. Charge your camera batteries, oil up your tramping boots, and head out there and get some pictures of the world’s only alpine parrot! Keep a look out on the KCT facebook page during the year for details on how to enter.
This year, Rob Pine took first place with his photo of two juvenile kea playing in the snow at Temple Basin (seen on the front page of this year’s newsletter). Rob also sent in another great image of a kea flying.

Second place winner: Cherie Palmer
Because of the overwhelming popularity of the first Kea Conservation Trust’s kea photo competition in 2013, we decided that it should be run again in 2014. This year Tom Goodman from the Kea Conservation Trust took on the role of chief judge and considered each entrant carefully with his artisan eye. We were amazed by the diversity of some of the images and there were some stunning submissions from people all over the world, but there could only be one winner.
Rob received a Kea Conservation Trust T-Shirt, publication of his photo in our very own Nestor Notabilis magazine and was given the opportunity to join in on a volunteer expedition in the mountains with kea. Our second place winner, Cherie Palmer, took a great photo of a kea at the Viaduct Lookout, Arthurs Pass.
