Inspiring people to have positive interactions with Kea by keeping Them wild.

Take the Kea Pledge!

I will not feed kea

Foraging for wild food keeps kea healthy and safe, but feeding kea encourages scavenging behaviour and creates conflict with people.

I will secure my belongings out of reach of kea
Kea are curious and explorative, so it is important that food, rubbish and personal belongings are kept out of reach.

How does it work?

You can sign the pledge at DOC Visitor Centres and the Great Walks across the South Island.

Why is the pledge so important?

We all have a role to play in keeping kea safe and healthy - what each of us choose to do matters! Keeping kea wild can mean the difference between life and death for our feathered friends. Please choose to protect kea by taking the pledge and liking and sharing with your family and friends. Thank you!

What do I get?

• Good vibes! You’re helping one of our most charismatic endangered species!

• Stickers – for your drink bottle, your car or your bag, to let others know your commitment to kea conservation!

How was the kea pledge born?

Through great partnerships! The kea pledge is a design project by Otago Polytechnic's Design students. The initial idea came from a DOC social science initiative, led by Joanne Aley, which looked at reducing harm to kea.

The brief for students was to create a logo that represented the kea and that followed the the Values and Purpose Statement “Inspiring people to have positive interactions with Kea by keeping it wild”.

Several students presented their logos to a panel from the Kea Recovery Group (Ngāi Tahu, DOC and KCT) and the one chosen (by Molly Smith) was then adapted to be included in a new Kea Advocacy Toolkit, a collaboration driven by the KCT with Ngāi Tahu, DOC, ZAA and KCT input.
